Turning Thrift Shoppers into Lifelong Community Supporters

Thrifty Shopper is a nonprofit retail network operating under the Rescue Mission Alliance. Every purchase funds shelter, meals, and services for people facing homelessness and poverty, so a repeat customer is not just revenue; it is a bed for the night.

The challenge

Looking for More than Punch Cards

The Thrifty Shopper team came to TapMango wanting a loyalty platform that could go beyond punch cards and generic promotions.

Their criteria were specific: engage customers through personalized campaigns, drive measurable results and repeat business, and partner with a team that understood the mission well enough to help execute on it.

They sell donated goods, clothing, furniture, and books to fund life-changing services, and keep millions of pounds of goods out of landfill each year. Marketing had to earn its keep against that.

The solution

Campaigns Built Around How People Actually Shop

With segmentation, Thrifty Shopper built loyalty journeys around what a customer typically spends rather than treating the whole list the same.

Low spenders received a 10% off $5+ voucher two days after their last visit. Average spenders got 10% off $20+ five days after theirs. Referrals let loyal shoppers invite friends and be rewarded when they joined, and the branded app gave everyone one place to check in, track rewards, and redeem.

Different offers for different shoppers, sent automatically, measured in dollars.

Results · Revenue & return visits

$278K

From One Low-Spender Voucher

The 10% off $5+ offer, timed two days after the last visit, generated over $278,000 in revenue on its own. The average-spender equivalent added a further $13,000.

20,000

Shoppers Brought Back

Automated Miss You campaigns reached customers who had not visited in 30 days or more, returning over 20,000 shoppers and more than $500,000 in additional revenue.

400+

New Customers at Zero Ad Spend

Friend referrals brought in more than 400 new customers without any advertising budget behind them.

1,774

App Check-Ins per Day

The branded app became the daily habit, averaging 1,774 check-ins a day across the network.

The Messages That Brought People Back

Each segment received its own offer on its own schedule, sent automatically from the same platform the team uses to run the stores.

Inside the program

A Partner, Not Just a Platform

Thrifty Shopper was assigned a senior Customer Success Manager who learned the business, its values, and its goals, and worked as an extension of the in-house team rather than a support queue.

Monthly promotional newsletters kept customers current on deals and mission highlights, turning casual shoppers into regular supporters.

On running the program day to day
“TapMango has made managing our marketing efforts much easier thanks to its user-friendly design. The platform offers a wide range of reporting tools, from quick summaries to in-depth insights. These features have helped us make more informed decisions and reach customers more effectively.”

For Thrifty Shopper, $1.5 million in voucher revenue is not just a financial figure. It is meals served, beds offered, and lives changed through the Rescue Mission Alliance.
